Following in God’s generous love
Stewardship refers to our call to follow God’s radical generosity—to live generously, giving our time, talents, and treasures to share in Christ’s work of mercy and love in our church community and the world around us. Members of our church and others pledge each year to give toward the life and mission of St. Paul’s. Below are resources for growing in our understanding and commitment to living out the radical generosity of Christ, which is to offer our whole selves as a gift of love and service to God and one another. If you are a part of this community, pray and consider what ways you might be able to contribute to what God is doing among us by giving of your time, talents, and resources. A gift, an offering, like that of Jesus Christ, who gave himself for the life of the world. And each of us has so much to offer with our unique passions, gifts, and abilities, whatever they may be. Why Give?
The most basic knowledge we have of God is that God is a giver of gifts: “God so loved the world, that God gave . . .” This is at the heart of the Good News of Jesus Christ—it is at the heart of everything. God has always lived in this generosity—eternally giving and receiving the entirety of love among Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Our salvation, the whole of creation, our very lives come from the outpouring of this life and love. God's eternal love as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit overflows, is gifted, pours out that we might exist, and that we might be brought into that love ourselves through Jesus Christ. So, what is most basic about us as human beings is also to be receivers and givers of gifts. As Christians we live recognizing, receiving, and responding to this truth: as God gives, so we give. We, as the Church, are called to offer ourselves to God and the world around us by living as a continued offering of God's love. We are givers of God's gifts.
Such a generous life involves the gift of our entire lives: our time, our talents, our resources. Financial giving is a part of our holistic life of worship of God and service to others. It is a part of the living reality of our faith, an active response to God's overflowing love and generosity, and a faithful act of love on our part in offering our whole lives back to God and to our neighbor. This means our giving should look like God’s giving, which we see in Christ, who gives his life for the life of the world and shows us what God’s love, that love that gives, really looks like. As the Body of Christ, as followers of Jesus, our loving generosity should be like his: holistic, other-focussed, sacrificial, and joyful.
As you think over your giving, consider whether your giving reaches the call of holistic self-offering, whether it meets your desire to care for others in the world, whether it is truly sacrificial and changes your daily life, and whether it is truly a joyful offering that gladdens your heart.
